Donald L. Smithers

Chief Master Sergeant Donald L. Smithers was born on 7 March 1937 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He graduated from Moore High School, Moore, Oklahoma and attended the University of Oklahoma.

Chief Smithers enlisted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard early in 1954. In May of that year, he entered active duty with the United States Air Force and served in many locations around the world. In March 1960, he enlisted in the Oklahoma Air National Guard where he applied his active duty experience in the field of electronics engineering and installation. In February 1975, he moved to Texas and joined the 272d Engineering Installation Squadron, Texas Air National Guard. His skills as an electronics mechanic and leadership ability earned him the position of Team Chief. He then advanced to Wire Superintendent and later to first sergeant. In October 1988, he was selected to serve as the State Senior Enlisted Advisor. During his tenure, he worked closely with senior officers to establish a Non-commissioned Officers Preparatory Course for junior enlisted personnel. He was directly responsible for the establishment of the Texas Air National Guard Outstanding Airman of the Year program. Chief Smithers established a State Chiefs Council to further improve communication and understanding among the enlisted force. He was very active in community and civil affairs where he energetically informed people of the role and importance of the Texas National Guard. Chief Smithers not only encouraged youth to enlist, but also ensured they would take an active role in the Guard. His entire career was built around the enlisted force and their quality of life.

Among his many awards and decorations, Chief Smithers has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Achievement Medal and the Lone Star Distinguished Service Medal.

Chief Smithers' long and dedicated service to his state and nation exemplifies the true citizen soldier and serves as an example for others to follow.
